All other tripod manufacturers try to reduce the weight of their aluminum tripods by reducing the thickness of the aluminum tubes (0,8 1 mm). This leads to weak and unstable tripods. Gitzo instead maintains thicker 1,2 mm tubes for additional rigidity and strength, and reduces the weight of other components by employing new technologies. This was painful research. Getting past all of the half-truths in the tripod advertisements (from multiple sources) was a very long process. Bottom line: metal tripods are great. Carbon fiber tripods are lighter but almost twice as expensive. You do the math. Is a one or two pound weight savings worth $300? The GT2330 metal tripod sets up fast, is very light (compared to my old Tilt All Professional tripod) and solid as a rock. It should last 30 years or more.

I was introduced to carbon fiber when I worked for a company that made missile nose tips. Threads of carbon were sewn into a cone shape, covered with a binder and then heated in an oven to very high temperatures. This mass of stuff fused into a solid object that was very heat resistant and had great damping properties. However the nose tip was very brittle and not designed to resist sharp impacts. I have looked closely at the legs of the carbon fiber tripods and could see the fibers running parallel to the legs and not cross hatched. The fibers were not closely spaced and did not interlock. This bothers me. Is a carbon fiber tripod mostly binder or carbon fiber and binder? Can it stand up to freezing temperatures and high impacts? Based on my experience, I am afraid that a carbon fiber tripod will degrade or crack over the long term as the binder ages. That is why I chose a metal tripod.
