I considered more expensive name brand units and also researched and considered quite a few other no-name units from China, but in the end I took a chance and decided on this one despite its lack of user reviews. I guess there always has to be a first! I would say that generally speaking if you really want all these features, are willing to deal with some quirks (big issue with FM radio), and have a firm budget cap this might be a good buy for you. If you are not limited in your budget you may be better off with a name brand. Knowing what I know now, I personally would have purchased something else instead.Bluetooth:
It easily paired with my phone. It does not seem to be capable of pairing with two devices simultaneously, so if a friend wants to stream music from their phone my experience was that you need to first unpair your own phone.
The quality of streaming music from internet radio is fair considering the limitations of streaming Bluetooth audio quality. The unit does NOT display album/artist/song information when streaming internet radio.
Phone call quality is great - no complaints from anyone I've called. There is no external microphone; it must be integrated to the front of the unit. I liked that because it is one less wire to run and I didn't want to have a mic conspicuously clipped to my visor or elsewhere.
Navigation:
System is slow to start up but once it is up and running it seems pretty accurate. It even shows your speed which I found to be pretty accurate within ~2-3MPH. The Points of Interest (POI) and little gas station icons along your route are nice features compared to the simple GPS navigation on my phone. It does interrupt your music with voice guidance but I think you may be able to disable those alerts. Some of the voice alerts can be annoying (exit highway in 400 feet. exit highway in 200 feet. exit highway NOW you maniac!) I have not yet tinkered with customizing these but there does appear to be some flexibility in these settings. The navigation program runs off a microSD card and the OS is WinCE 6.0 - I've read that with some of these systems you may be able to change the Nav program and maps by putting in a different SD card and then telling the unit the new file path, but I have not tried this.
You need to find a good place to mount your GPS antenna. I already have a security/remote start antenna mounted on my windshield, so I wanted to find an inconspicuous place for the GPS antenna. I opted for a spot just between the front air vents, under the trim (see pics). This location has worked well so far for reception.
CD/DVD:
I haven't yet played a CD, but DVD picture and audio quality is great so I would have to imagine this also applies to music CDs. There is a parking brake wire which you need to ground in order to allow your passengers to watch DVD while the car is in motion. There are also additional A/V outputs if you want to connect additional screens (e.g. in headrests).
iPod/Other Input:
I did not install the iPod cable since I don't have an iPod. It connects in the back and you then need to run the cable somewhere and I didn't want to deal with hiding the other end for the rare occasion someone might want to plug their iPod or iPhone into it. There is, however, a mini-USB and an AUX jack input in the front. There is also a microSD slot in the front (in addition to the GPS microSD). I have played songs from MicroSD storage and the display will show file names (NOT the tagged song titles) and it does not seem to retain folder structure if that is how you store your music; all files were displayed in a pretty long list despite my storing each album in its own folder.
FM Radio:
My experience with the radio is that the FM radio signal gets weaker or overrun by static VERY frequently. That was never a problem with the factory radio I replaced. I re-checked the antenna connection and that is not the problem. This is by far my biggest complaint with the unit overall, and I would probably return the unit for this alone if I were not so put off by the hassle of uninstalling the unit, dealing with returns, and putting my old radio back in. I read this is a common issue with aftermarket units, especially if someone has an amplifier for their antenna that needs powered. I checked and traced the wiring against my car's wiring, twice, and verified that the power antenna wire from the unit's harness was connected to the power antenna amplifier in my car. The FM signal is still awful, so I assume it is not sending enough power to the antenna amplifier. As a result I would NOT recommend this unit to someone who has an antenna amplifier that requires power.
Pros:
-Price, considering the features you get with this, and the expansion options (TV, backup cam, video outputs, etc.)
-Bluetooth audio quality and ease of pairing with devices
-Doesn't look as obviously aftermarket as other models do
-The wiring harness attached appears to be the type to fit any Toyota made '87 or later
-Fairly simple installation (partially due to the fact that the wiring harness fit my car right out of the box). Though for my car I needed to buy a different factory bezel because the original bezel was a part of my integrated radio.
Cons:
-FM radio signal for powered antennas
-Navigating parts of the system itself are not so intuitive, but I can fumble my way around and will probably get the hang of it eventually.
-Daytime screen visibility is pretty poor when it is really sunny
-Navigation is a bit slow to start up (~1 minute).
-While the unit does have the ability to multitask, streaming music briefly cuts out when switching between functions, and then comes back. (e.g. from Bluetooth to Navigation)
-NO Sirius/XM integration
