Sony Portable Radio Recorder R51 ICZ-R51 Review

I have been trying to find a high quality AM/FM radio with SD recording capability for over the air broadcasts of our national broadcaster who does not offer digital copies online for all their broadcasts. I have tried the Sangean PR D8 but found it only let you schedule one event and its FM reception was weaker than other Sangean radios I own. Also, the SD capability was rudimentary and it struggled with 16 and 32 gb SD cards failing to show more than 3 folders. I also read reviews of the various Tecsun offerings and they received poor reviews, particularly the audio quality of their SD recordings. This led me try the Sony offering which sounded great on the spec sheet ... multiple timers, 32gb SD support and Sony quality. After sorting through the Japanese manual and printed characters, I sadly discovered the radio is really intended for the Japanese market as the FM reception ends at 90MHZ. A little wiki investigation revealed the higher bandwidth is reserved for Japanese analog TV. Unfortunately, the public broadcaster transmits at 99.1 MHZ in our region. Thankfully, the Japanese vendor graciously agreed to accept a return. The search continues ...
