UNIVERSAL WIRELESS KEYPAD REMOTE ALMOND Review

If you are just looking for a universal remote, look away. This is not for the casual user. This remote is really geared to the professional installer. It has awesome capabilities, including variable based screens. If you haven't programmed one before, it could be a big shock. It takes some time.

Second caveat... you may not be able to get the software from URC to program this. I emailed them before buying and got a response that said they would provide it. But, when I looked at the form, it said it was only for other models of remote. But, within a few days and one followup email, they did end up providing the software, thankfully. Without the software, the remote is useless!

That said, you can achieve greatness with this remote. It has more pages and memory than most anyone will know what to do with. For a text-only remote, it really has lots of capability. It is probably overkill for most people, but if you have many devices or rooms in an automation setup, then this is probably a good match. Also, the wall mounting means it serves a dual role. Mounting screws seem to be about a double-gang box spacing, but I haven't verified yet.

The range is very good with this - haven't had a problem with that. The variable backlighting is a nice touch and provides some good context to the many menu levels. I haven't come up with a good use yet for the variables, but nice to know there is another dimension available still. That isn't to say I can't imagine how to use variables - just not the way they provide them.
