I have been looking to upgrade my system with a new-fangled DAC for some time now. I have an old apple tv that I converted into a mac mini running Pure Music and playing to one of those cheapy Muse DACs that I also got on amazon for around $35. It was actually fine, but I wanted to break into the world of 192/24, so a new DAC was needed.

This zero has all the things people talk about with good sounding DACs (627 opamp, onboard torroidal transformer, etc.). So I bought it thinking to avoid the $500 layout I was expecting to pay for a decent DAC. Well, I should have just shelled out $500 for something else because honestly, the little Muse sounds better. The highs were sparkling with the muse, very subdued with the zero. The magical midrange I was expecting from that 627 opamp was more of a yawn. The soundstage is confusing, it moves all over the place. The muse had it locked in. Truth be told, I couldn't really find an improvement in sound quality when switching from the apple tv analogue outputs to the optical out to this Zero. That statement alone should qualify it for negative 3 stars, but...

The one review I've seen for this DAC specifically noted all of the things I noted but said the problems vanished with break in. I leave my stuff on 24 hours a day so I figure 72 hours is a good start in warming it up. No change. I'll give it another week, but if it doesn't improve..back it goes.

two weeks later and I'm ok with this:
The imaging has completely locked in. The treble is back without issue. Overall the sound is worth $180 or less, which is the going rate in summer 2013. A good way to open up the sound of a computer without dropping the $300 plus to get a high end DAC. USB is not as impressive to me, but its there if you must have it. I have herd better DACs but they cost an arm and a leg and were being played in ultra awesome systems in treated rooms. If you have truly read this review, than you care about the sound enough to also check out the SMSL HD-650 as another, slightly cheaper, possibility.
