Sherwood S-7 3D Panoramic Soundbar System (Black) Review

This sound bar was purchased from another seller not listed on Amazon with a good return policy in case I did not like it and a lot cheaper in price. This sound bar is relatively new so I could not find any reviews. Here's my $0.02...

The thing that made me take a closer look was the ability to connect multiple sources to the sound bar as opposed to my Vizio SB4020M-B0 which will only accept one input cable (optical, digital coax or stereo) and still work properly (Vizio says this unit is an updated model of the VIZIO SB4020M-A0). The Sherwood inputs are three HDMI, one optical and one RCA stereo. By design the Sherwood accepts multiple inputs. There are two subwoofer coax out jacks if you want to run two subwoofers instead of one. There is no coax digital audio input so keep this in mind if you have a source with coax out digital audio only. The unit has one HDMI out for video only to connect to your TV. There is no bass/treble/tone related adjustment.

First off this is not a "real" full blown home entertainment system. It is a sound bar, just what I expected. It has surround sound settings; yes we know you will now get "real" surround sound from a sound bar, only simulated sound. If you want the real deal dig a little deeper in your pockets and skip this and all other sound bars. I am not an audiophile; I just need "decent" sound. My purpose is to improve the sound for my 52 inch 4-1/2 year old Samsung LCD TV with digital cable box, Sony Blu Ray player with wireless streaming (mainly Netflix, Pandora and Amazon Prime). I also have space limitations. The TVs built in speakers sound like junk as with most newer and thinner TVs.

My original setup was a Cox cable box and Sony BDP-S590 Blu Ray connected to the TV via HDMI and the TV audio out to a Vizio sound bar via optical cable. A Yamaha YST-FSW050BL2 subwoofer was connected to the Vizio sound bar and is now connected to the Sherwood sound bar.

This unit has a little more height than a lot of sound bars. Check Sherwood's website for dimensions. You may need to elevate your TV a bit if the bottom of the screen does not clear the top of the sound bar. My Samsung TV does not have this problem. As with all sound bars consider the height and length if placed in front of your TV with respect to blocking the TV remote sensor. The Sherwood does not have a remote pass thru.

WHAT WORKS FOR ME:

My TV (1) has optical, coax digital and two channel stereo RCA external speaker outputs, but will only outputs sound in stereo from HDMI inputs regardless if optical or coax cable is used to connect to an external speakers. My cable box and Blu Ray is connected to the sound bar via HDMI (2) The TV sound out level is very high with no adjustments which makes the minimal volume on external speakers louder than I would prefer. Audio gurus, I think this is called gain, correct? The cable box has a volume control, but by design has no effect when a HDMI cable is used, only works with analog stereo connections (3) Solved: the cable box and Blue Ray is now connected to the sound bar via HDMI and I now have the option for Dolby, DTS or stereo input into the sound bar with acceptable minimal volume levels when watching TV. See below for alternate cable box connection.

My cable box (Cox) when HDMI is used for both video and sound outputs a huge volume difference between HD and standard definition channels. This is ok if you don't mind constantly adjusting the sound. I solved this by setting the cable box to stereo sound via optical cable to the sound bar and video only form cable box to the TV via HDMI. The standard and HD volume is now acceptable. The tradeoff is the cable box does not output HD in Dolby, just stereo. This is acceptable to me because the sound bar has settings for Surround, Stereo Surround and Stereo. I select one of the three depending on what I am watching.

The Blu Ray player which has Netflix and Amazon streaming apps included is connected to the sound bar via HDMI. Video only goes to the TV via the sound bar's HDMI out port. This enables the Blu Ray to send Dolby, DTS or stereo to the sound bar which these choices are not possible if the Blu Ray is connected directly to the TV.

SUBWOOFER

I would suggest adding a subwoofer to this sound bar. It is not absolutely necessary; it depends on your personal taste and purpose of having the sound bar. If all you need to do is improve the sound of junk built in TV speakers this will do the job. Comparing the Sherwood to my Visio sound bar, the Sherwood blows the Visio out of the water, both without a sub woofer connected. This is true even though the Vizio has a treble and bass control and the Sherwood does not. If you want to have bass that stands out and to get the special effects from digital sound sources then add a sub woofer. Listening to music from a quality source is greatly enhanced with the sub woofer. There are two sub woofer out jacks if you want to add a second. The sound bar is not a receiver with respect listening to music, but there is huge difference in quality versus using the TV built in speakers.

PROS

Has a LED display on the front of the sound bar.

Has CEC (Consumer Electronic Control). I have no real need for CEC, so I will not make any comments.

Has DRC (Dynamic Range Control)

Has an option to route HDMI sound to your TV instead of output from the sound bar for whatever reason you may have to do so.

Has subwoofer level control

Recognizes Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby True-HD and DTS sound sources.
Has settings for two, four and six hour standby.

CONS (NOT SHOW STOPPERS)

Remote is very small (so are most sound bar remotes).

The print on the remote is very small for 50+ year old eyes. Ok once you learn the button functions by site.

Some functions that you may want to adjust frequently such as the sub woofer level is buried in in sub menus via remote. This could be solved by having a larger remote with more buttons such as a dedicated sub woofer level control.

Other than illustrating the cable connections the printed manual is worthless. For example it mentions the standby settings (off-2hr-4hr-6hr), but does not go into detail such as if the system does not have any input it will power down after a specified period of time or will reduce power after a period of time starting at power on.

There is no tone, treble or bass control.

SUMMARY

I am giving this sound bar five stars. With respect to the price the sound is very good and has many features not found on most sound bars with a lesser selling price, especially the ability to handle multiple devices via its inputs. For what you get with the Sherwood it is a good value. The selling price is about one hundred dollars more than the Vizio mentioned in this review. I would have given the Sherwood 4-1/2 stars only because it does not have a tone/treble/bass control, but warrants better than four stars. 4-1/2 starts is not available, so it gets 5 stars
