The cells have been recorded by a contrast enhancement technique known as Phase Contrast(positive variation). The pictured instrument contains none of the necessary phase objectives,turret condenser with phase annuli or centering telescope that are required to allow Phase Contrast to operate. This instrument is strictly outfitted with optics for standard brightfield illumination only! Phase Contrast equipment might be able to be purchased for this microscope at,of course,additional cost. Cytological detail will appear quite different when viewed in the brightfield mode,even with the condenser iris stopped down to attempt to create satisfactory inter- & intracellular contrast and it will generally be inferior to a well prepared specimen viewed with properly aligned Phase Contrast illumination.
