Celestron 71404 TrailSeeker 8x42 Binoculars (Army Green) Review

I'm not a hunter (I think these binoculars would be great for hunting though) but I do like to birdwatch and watch sports and these are the best binoculars I've ever had.

They are 8 power and the view is crystal clear, with very wide field of focus and also the ability to look at objects close up (6.5feet).

I love that they are lightweight - 23.1 ounces; are fully waterproof and because of being nitrogen purged are fogproof too. I've had problems in the past with cheaper binoculars fogging up on me.

Even though the blurb and the box say they are army green, they are so dark they are almost black in color.

They come with a premium back-ventilated harness to keep the weight from hanging from your neck and instead, being distributed to your shoulders and back.

They come with a nice wide neckstrap if you do want to use that and a very nice black carrying case with a front pocket and with a detachable shoulder strap and also with an area on the back that can be threaded on your belt. They also come with lens caps, and lens cloth. They say they come with a rainguard but I didn't find it.

The angular field of view is 8.1�. The linear field of view (at 1,000 yards) is 426 feet. The eye relief is 17mm. The lenses are fully multi-coated. There are a lot more specs that I don't understand but I just know these are the easiest to focus and use binoculars I've ever had.

The binoculars are made in China.

I bought this surveillance camera because I was sure I was being robbed by my once-a-week apartment cleaner and wanted to have proof before I took action. I looked for a camera that could be in plain sight, record only when there was motion and never be suspected of being a camera. My search led to the purchase of this camera and it is everything that I hoped for. The dimensions are only 3.75"x2.5"x1.25" and as you can see from the photo, it does not look like anything to be concerned about if the intruder can see only the front side. A power cord comes with the camera so you can plug it in to any outlet or you can run it off 4 AA batteries. But with the life of the batteries said to be only about 6 hours it is best to use the power cord as much as you can. Also supplied is the cable to plug the camera into the TV so you can watch whatever has been recorded. You can record in 640x480 or 320x240 and there are 3 choices with respect to quality of the video. The memory is an SD card, either 2GB, 4GB or 8GB, depending on the model you choose. All 3 models are the same,except for the capacity of the SD card. The card is built in so cannot be replaced for one of larger capacity.

I am looking forward to using the camera on the maid's next visit and seeing her face when she sees the show.

Instructions come with the camera, but set up is simple. To record, plug in and attach the power cord or 4 AA batteries and turn the unit on. To play back, plug in the camera and use the yellow cord to connect the camera to the video jack on the back of the TV and then, if necessary, click the TV?Video button on the front of the TV or on the remote. This starts the show.

When you first get the camera you must set time and date and indicate whether you want to record only when there is motion. So the first step is to follow the instructions given for the menu that is built in. Nothing complicated, just follow the steps in the instruction sheet.

On the back of the camera is a switch where you can set the camera to record over what is on the SD card or you can set it to stop when the card is full. One of the options on the menu is to format the card, which removes everything so you can start fresh for the next surveillance.

A mounting device comes with the camera if you wish to attach it to a wall.

The supplier of this camera also has what is called EasyCAPture that lets you connect the camera to a computer, providing it is not Windows 7. This device works with XP but not Widows 7. Because I know somebody who has XP on the computer I bought this device in case I need to make a copy of the video of the theft in progress for the police. When I first got the shipping box from UPS, i thought that it was kind of big and heavy for such a small lens. My first thought was that the seller had messed up my order and sent me a Canon EF 100-400 IS USM lens instead of a Vivitar doubler. Opened the box and there was this beautiful wooden box inside, I thought that this time I might be getting a fine piece of nautical instrument,........no it was the extender.

If I was to rate the wooden box that it came in, I would give it a five star review, I'm not! The autofocus on the Vivitar doesn't work with my Canon, or it doesn't work most of the time, it just can't zoom on a subject and focus, you have to focus manually. My Canon 18-55 IS USM is not compatible with the extender. My Canon EF 75-300MM does work fine with the extender but it's better if you use manual focus. I've only had the thing for 3 days, I'm just learning how to play with it, it works better on AV setting than program, and in some case I'm having to use a higher ISO and exposure time. I'm just waiting for my new tripod to get here, so I can use the whole setup with it and a release cable. Pictures so far aren't bad, but when I did enlarge this photo of a jetliner flying high above on my computer, the results were a little grainy and reminded me of the old propaganda photos from the Soviet Union that I used to see in military magazines. For $140.00, I can't expect the same results as a $500.00 extender. Will keep it for now and might update my review after I try the thing on a tripod.

No complaints with the seller (New World Video) the item did arrived in good shape and way ahead of schedule.

UPDATE: I've owned this extender for almost 4 months now and the results are better than what I was expecting. Took a lot's of pictures of birds in the feeder with my new tripod of course and the results were pretty good. Everything is manual focus ( auto-focus won't work ) but so was my old Canon AE-1 Program. You will also need to raise the ISO, but I was impressed with the details. For about $ 150.00 it is not that bad, and since the big Japanese earthquake I've noticed a big price change on Canon equipment, so this thing will definately have to do for now.

Vanguard VSF-55 Spotting Scope Review

Bought this scope for indoor target shooting. Good for .22 cal. at 50 yards but not quite adequate for 100 yards. This scope is excellent for the price. Works as good as some much more expensive scopes I have used. The tripod works good and is steady for tabletop use. Only drawback, common to a lot of scopes is focus gets a little fuzzy at full zoom. Slightly backing off on the zoom gets rid of the problem. Gets good light for the lens size.
