The Vixen PORTA Mount come equipped with two fine adjustment handles for whole circle slow motion in both directions, very useful in searching and tracking celestial objects. In addition, this is a great mount for terrestrial viewing. Our gear drives make it a simple matter to precisely track a planet or a ship on the horizon by simply turning the elevation and or azimuth control handles. The “World-Standard dovetail attachment system on PORTA was developed by Vixen. This allows the PORTA to accept various dovetail mounted optical tubes and binoculars.

This is a unique alt azimuth tripod as you can freely reposition your scope and immediately use the slow motion controls without needing to engage clutches. Very clever.
Right out of the box, there are several improvements that can be made. The main problem is stability. With the legs extended, the tripod becomes unstable and you will notice image tremor when you try to focus. Using vibration suppressor pads (sold by Celestron or Meade) help very much. Keeping the legs as unextended as possible (you might have to use a very low stool if you have a refractor) helps very much. The other thought for those with handy hands is to fashion clamps for the upper portion of the legs. I also undid the mount from the bottom of the tripod and took apart the azimuth assembly. Typical import thick cheap nasty grease and metal filings everywhere. I cleaned it up, removed filiings, regreased it, and correctly tensioned the spring loaded nut controlling the azimuth. It made a night and day difference. The final hint is to buy two of Vixen's long flexible focus knobs. They will allow you to slew slow motion without introducing any vibration. This is great for double star and planetary observation when you don't want to wait for those irritating vibrations to die out everytime you touch the mount. Throw away those two silly cheap plastic knobs. All in all, an attractive light weight mount. Wished they made the tripod more stable.
